Spirit of Seonbi |
The spirit of Seonbi refers
to a spirit in which one should understand propriety
and sense of shame; learn to be reasonable by learning
morals, arts, and science; value honor and principles
throughout one's life; avoid shameful and improper
behavior; be proper in one's remarks and behavior;
and observe laws and regulations and respect justice.
Seonbi also courteously refers to persons who have
learned and posses knowledge but do not take any
government post..
For a very long time, the people of Chungnam have
tended to their parents with filial piety at home
and have never deviated from propriety in their
social life. Through this, they have been respected
by others.
In addition, equipped with the qualities required
of Seonbi, they refrained from producing waste and
were proud of living a frugal life. They never hesitated
to teach other people the path expected of human
beings and earned the title of Chungcheong-do Yangban(noblemen).
Lamentably, with goods and services becoming more
affordable these days, some people
tend to engage in extravagance, waste, and uncontrolled
lives, and egoism has become prevalent in today's
society.
Some people tend to employ whatever means and methods
available to gratify their selfish desires, and
tend to forsake their conscience and moral responsibilities
to earn money, which contribute to corrupting our
society.
Our ancestors shied away from injustice and did
not covet wealth, and were charitable towards the
poor. Once they became government officials, they
received the respect from the people for their integrity
and purity, which means a lot for us today.
We should inherit this spirit of Seonbi by diligently
improving our learning and sense of virtue, living
frugally, and pursuing a temperate lifestyle. We
should also be strict with ourselves but should
be generous to others so that we may create a society
filled with humanity and justice. |
