Pioneer spirit
Pioneer spirit means overcoming the present difficulties with progressive thought and aggressive action, and searching for a future-oriented course. The pioneer spirit is the spirit in which one should not be afraid of taking risks to pursue new values and taking the lead with creative work.

Chungnam people have possessed this progressive spirit in trying to build an utopian society in their mind.
As may be seen in the case of Ajiki, who transferred Baekje culture to Japan; Sim Hoon who wrote "Evergreen Tree," a story depicting a Utopian farming town, and took the lead in the rural community enlightenment campaign; and Seo Jae Pil who published 'Independence' newspapers, the pioneer spirit has been running unceasingly in the minds of Chungnam people.
Quite recently, a massive nationwide reform movement to attain globalization through changes and reforms has been actively pushed ahead with nationwide participation in all fields.
There are, however, a few people around us who are scared of making changes and instead are content with the present situation. Those people tend to be passive in their work and do not perform their responsibilities or duties, but instead try to depend on any assistance they may get from others.
Pioneering does not mean throwing away the old system and culture. It means understanding in the proper perspective the cultural
heritage our ancestors achieved and using this knowledge to facilitate a great leap forward into the unknown future.
Should we ever fail to adjust to the environment of the times out of contentment with the present situation, we may not survive in the present age, an era that keeps changing day by day.
We should model ourselves after the valuable pioneering spirit that has been handed down to us by our ancestors and should organize our wisdom to better cope with the age of globalization where only the theory of mega-competition applies.
