Meaning of Filial Piety Filial Duty is a tradition our people have observed since ancient times and calls for us to serve our parents with our utmost efforts during their lifetime, to always remember their benevolence, and to perform our duties as their children even after their death. The thought of 'filial piety' calls for us to serve our parents appropriately and respect seniors. From there, it develops into love for our neighbors, service for our community, and eventually into loyalty to our people and our nation. This is why our ancestors used to teach their children that practicing 'filial piety' towards their parents was one way of being loyal to their country. Filial piety was the basis of everything in their lives. Even these days the spirit of 'filial piety' active in our minds is not substantially different from that of the past. Filial piety is not anything grandiose but something near to us. It calls for us to be a bit more attentive and considerate to our parents while we live together with them. After all, they are the most important people in the world to us.
