Hyeonchungsa was constructed in 1706 at the petition of the Confucian students in Asan in the 30th year of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty (1704) with an aim of performing religious services in honor of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, Chungmugong by his pen name.
