| Hyeonchungsa was constructed in 1706 at
the petition of the Confucian students in
Asan in the 30th year of King Sukjong of the
Joseon Dynasty (1704) with an aim of performing
religious services in honor of Admiral Yi
Sun-shin, Chungmugong by his pen name. In
the following year the king conferred its
name board. By order of Daewongun to abolish
all the private schools across the country
in. 1865, the Hyeonchungsa Shrine was closed
for the time being but was permitted to reinstate
the portrait scroll of Yi Sun-shin through
the efforts of the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper company
in 1932. In 1962, the relics display hall
was opened and in 1966, they made the premises
a sanctuary and dedicated the work in1967.
Since then, the Shrine has been expanded and
repaired several times. The present sanctuary
spans 163,096 pyeong and its main facilities
include the main hall, old main hall, relics
hall, an old house, an archery practice ground,
"Red Arrow Gate, "Red Gate, and
the tomb of Yi Myeon, son of Admiral Yi Sun-shin.
